Fools
2015
Fools is an interactive music video installation that explores how gesture-based interaction and transmedia storytelling can transform the way music is experienced and promoted. Through multiple interpretations of a cover of an Etta James song, the work amplifies its emotional and poetic qualities, inviting audiences to engage with the music through different forms of interaction.
Fools explores how digital technology can bring audiences closer to the energy and spontaneity of a live music performance. Inspired by the social cues, body language, and unspoken communication that shape musical improvisation, the project investigates how these qualities might be translated into an interactive digital experience.
The installation features a performance of Fools We Mortals Be, a cover of an Etta James song, in which dancers respond to the audience’s movements through a webcam-based gestural interface. As viewers move, they interact with the dancers on screen, becoming active participants in the performance rather than passive observers. The experience explores a balance between audience participation and artistic intention.
While the audience influences the visual experience, the musician retains control of the music itself. Through this exchange, Fools considers how interactive media might extend the reach of live performance, create new forms of audience engagement, and open up alternative ways for musicians to share their work beyond the traditional stage.
